It would be very useful if availability searches could take room-level occupancy settings into account, so that only rooms configured to accommodate the requested number of guests are returned in the search results.
How the value is currently /actually enforced: This value is verified against the number of guests entered in a reservation when that room type is selected for booking, during the reservation creation process [2]. Important caveat: it is NOT verified when a search is performed for rates and room types or specific rooms — so a search screen might still show a room type as available even if the party size exceeds max occupancy; the block only kicks in once you actually try to build/save the reservation with that room type selected.
Room Type Max Occupancy = the default ceiling for that category of room.Room Max Occupancy = a per-room override, letting individual rooms deviate from their room type's default (higher or lower, e.g., a room that's undersized relative to its type, or one with extra capacity). The system checks occupancy at the point of booking a specific room/room type against the number of guests, but availability search results aren't filtered by this rule — so it's possible to see a room type in search results for a party size that would later get blocked when you try to actually book it.
